The Journey of Us {series}: Do you believe in love at first sight?

“Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?”

I was set up. Like completely set up. I had no idea that when I walked into my friends’ house that night that I would leave the next morning in love. I thought I had been in love before. But after that night, I realized that for the first time, I was in love almost immediately; hook, line and sinker.

Let me tell you the story.

I was invited to my friend’s house to watch a UFC fight. This friend was the only other lady that was going to be there, which I was ok with. She invited me because she was outnumbered and because I like to watch the fights. Or so I thought. I had no idea that she had orchestrated this hook up. But Trevor did.

Trevor actually already had my phone number. Apparently he was too chicken to use it, which was for his best interest, because knowing me; I would have flipped ALL THE WAY OUT! He knew I was coming. And as far as he knew, I knew that he was going to be there and that we were supposed to “meet.”

Well, I knew nothing of the sort. And that became crystal clear from the moment I entered the room.

I worked until about 3:30 that afternoon. I made a few quick stops to pick up beer and some snacks that I knew I would eat (more to come on that in just a moment). I had never been to this friend’s house before. As a landmark, my friend told me “You will see Trevor’s big silver truck in the driveway, along with my van and that’s how you will know where I live.” Ok, but who is Trevor? I had only heard her mention him a handful of times and never in a way that I would have ever thought we were being set up.

I found the house. When I entered, carrying a case of bud light and some cheese and crackers, my friend greeted me at the door and directed me towards the kitchen. She motioned for me to set the beer down, which I did on the island. Standing next to me was the guy with the biggest grin. I remember thinking to myself, “Who is this creep?”

“Hi. I’m Trevor.” Oh shit. THIS is Trevor? The guy would not stop smiling. So naturally, I thought he was just a creep.

“Hello” I mustard up. I mean I didn’t want to be rude.

“Can I fix you a plate? We have pizza and wings” he said flipping open the pizza box on the island to reveal a pepperoni pie.

“I’m vegetarian” I snapped back as I grabbed a can of bud light and literally chugged it and walked away.

Don’t worry you guys. The rest of the night was not at all like the first couple of minutes. I ate some cheese, and I was much better. Don’t mess with me when I am hungry. This is a lesson that has stuck with Trevor still to this day. But seriously, it turned out to be one of the best nights of my life. Obviously, the night got better. We watched the fight and we stayed up all night talking and getting to know one another. By the time I left for work at 6:30 the next morning, I was all smiles. The rest is history.

Recalling this night right now literally brings the biggest smile to my face. This was Trevor’s first experience with me. It probably should have been his last. Why this guy even gave me the time of day after the first five minute encounter is still beyond me. If I was him, I would have written me off and ran for the hills. But instead, in his Trevor fashion, he just remained calmed, made sure my plate was always full of cheese and that my wine glass was never empty.

Family and friends and even complete strangers when I tell them our story are shocked at how fast things moved for us. But I wasn’t. I knew that night, that something was different. I could feel in my soul that he was the one. Time didn’t matter at that point. Trevor came into my life when I least expected it and he saved me.

So while I was not instantly in love with Trevor the first moment I laid eyes on him, I knew that I was in love with him that first night. And for that, I do believe in love {the} first Night.
